Rooted in Community: The Vision Behind the Rourk Library Learning Garden
With limited indoor space and a growing community, the Rourk Branch Library needed a new way to expand its offerings—without building new walls. The solution? A vibrant, thoughtfully designed outdoor environment that invites readers and learners of all ages to gather, grow, and explore.
The upcoming Rourk Library Learning Garden, located just behind the library, will serve as an extension of our programs and a peaceful place for self-guided learning. It will offer:
Dedicated space for outdoor library events and children's programs
Benches and tables for reading, reflection, and relaxation
Garden pathways lined with engraved commemorative bricks
🌿 The project was envisioned by the NC Cooperative Extension Master Gardener Interns, Class of 2023 and approved by County Library Manager Patricia Dew. Thanks to the FOL Rourk Branch's Bricks Campaign, community members and businesses purchased personalized bricks to become the foundation for the garden. There is still time to purchase a brick!
Great progress has been made! Special thanks to:
✔ AMP Landscaping for installing the patio, pouring the slab for our future pavilion, and the completing the first sidewalk
✔ The Brunswick County Department of Parks and Recreation. Without help from our community partners this garden would still be just a dream
In addition to our Bricks Campaign, donations can be made to help with the purchase of specific items that are needed to truly make the best use of the garden such as:
Trees, bushes, and native plants
Tables and seating for small group use
Permanent StoryWalk® holders to place on the grounds
Shade features and interactive learning elements
This garden will be a lasting legacy—a symbol of growth, learning, and community. Whether you choose to sponsor a plant, purchase a brick, or attend an event, every contribution brings us one step closer to making this dream a reality.
